Arbutus is located in the west side of Vancouver, directly south of Kitsilano. It is bordered by 16th Avenue in the north, 41st Avenue in the south, Mackenzie Street in the west, and East Boulevard in the east. Other surrounding Vancouver neighborhoods include Dunbar, Shaughnessy, MacKenzie Heights and Quilchena.

 

Demographic

The Arbutus neighbourhood is made up of a diverse group of people with varying interests that attract them to this part of Vancouver. The neighbourhood is popular with working professionals, many of whom are employed at UBCnearby, making it generally an older and more affluent demographic than other areas that are more affordable to students and recent graduates. Due to its safe streets, great parks, fantastic schools and the fact this community has one of the lowest crime rates in Vancouver, Arbutus is also becoming an attractive area to new parents and young couples planning on raising a family.

 

Recreation

As well as being able to enjoy the area’s close proximity to downtown Vancouver, UBC and nearby beaches including Kitsilano and Jericho, the Arbutus neighborhood also has several recreational facilities within its bounds to keep residents busy. The Arbutus Club offers its members facilities, from a fitness center to tennis and squash courts, providing activities to help people to lead an active lifestyle.

Nearby community centres include the Dunbar Community Centre , home to a dance studio, a darkroom, a gemstone lab and a sauna and whirlpool, and the Kitsilano War Memorial Community Centre.

 

Restaurants

If you enjoy dining out at restaurants, Arbutus is a neighbourhood with plenty of choice. Many restaurants and cafes are located along nearby Arbutus Street, with popular choices including farm-to-fork restaurant, Gramercy Grill, The Boathouse Restaurant and Arbutus Coffee. If you want to grab a quick bite, other casual eateries such as Italian pizza cafe, Napoletana Pizza , I Sushi and Subway are also located on Arbutus Street. W 41st is another popular area for dining out, with restaurants like Jinya Ramen Westside, Sofra Mediterranean Kitchen and Minerva Pizza & Steak House Ltd all populating the area. Arbutus Street also features seafood market, Finest At Sea , an M M Food Market , as well as Pete Meat Butcher Shop and Deli , meaning Arbutus residents don't need to travel far to do their grocery shopping. Other popular stores include women and children's clothing boutique, Pebble , Celsia Florist, Tisol Pet Nutrition and Supply Store , and Edible Arrangements , which sells clever arrangements and gift baskets made up of gourmet fresh and chocolate-dipped fruit. Anything else you need can be conveniently accessed at nearby Kitsilano or downtown Vancouver.

 

Schools

Arbutus is a popular neighbourhood with families, not only because of its safe streets, but because of its great schools. Both Carnarvon Elementary School and Trafalgar Elementary School are located in Arbutus, and accept children from kindergarten age through to grade 7, giving parents options for where they want to send their children. Prince of Wales Secondary School is located in the neighbourhood, and of course, UBC is located nearby too offering higher education options.

 

Transportation

Arbutus is the 14th most walkable neighbourhood in Vancouver with a walk score of 70, meaning most errands can be accomplished by foot. For errands not easily accessible by foot, Arbutus also has good public transportation, connecting residents to nearby neighbourhoods including Kitsilano, Shaughnessy and Kerrisdale. The Arbutus Greenway, a north-south transportation corridor that will connect people, parks and communities, from False Creek to the Fraser River, is also currently in the initial stages of planning.
