History
 
While Grandview began as an area of nature and wilderness, when the Vancouver-New Westminster interurban railway opened in September 1891, many people came to the area to live in the area’s first residential streets. Years later in the late 1890s, 2nd and 3rd Avenues, between Clark and Woodland were constructed, opening the area for development. In 1904 with the arrival of the city water system along Commercial Drive, the neighbourhood continued to expand.
 
Location
 
Located to the east of Downtown Vancouver on the other side of Mount Pleasant, Grandview stretches south from the shores of Burrard Inlet and encompasses portions of the popular Commercial Drive area. The boundaries of Commercial Drive are Venables Street to the north, E 22nd Avenue to the south, Clark Drive to the west, and Nanaimo Street to the east.
 
Demographic
 
Grandview is a neighbourhood filled with artistic and environmentally friendly, singles and families of all ages and cultures. Young professionals are often drawn to Commercial Drive for its vibrant nightlife and culture. Grandview as a whole is slowly transforming into a family friendly area due to its easy access to schools and other amenities. This neighbourhood offers younger people the ability to buy somewhere affordable, while being close to all that Burnaby and downtown Vancouver have to offer.
 
Residential Housing
 
Grandview is home to a range of apartments, multi-family homes, townhouses and divided houses, all with varying styles. Commercial Drive, has more affordable options for one and two bedroom condos in particular, with prices increasing the closer you get to restaurants, shops and transit, as with other neighbourhoods. Recreation
 
One of Grandview-Woodland’s most popular attractions is Commercial Drive, also known as ‘The Drive’ by locals, is known as one of Vancouver’s Vancouver’s cultural epicentres. Featuring annual street festivals such as the Parade of Lost Souls, organized by Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, as well as a range of multicultural shops and restaurants, residents will rarely be stuck for something to do. Grandview is also home to the Britannia Library and the Britannia Community Centre, offering various recreational programs, an ice rink, indoor pool, and fitness centre, as well as numerous local parks and outdoor activities. The Rio Theatre on Broadway is a great spot to catch a movie, showcasing films new and old.

Restaurants
 
Whatever cuisine you’re looking for, Grandview has it. With Commercial Drive home to a range of ethnic, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free eateries, as well as a variety of coffee shops, residents are spoilt for choice. Popular choices include Jamjar, serving Lebanese and Mediterranean Cuisine, Arriva Ristorante, serving Italian food, with gluten free and vegetarian options, and Tangent Cafe, a great spot for brunch or coffee. Commercial Drive also offers some great bars and pubs with some of the best patios in Vancouver, including St Augustine’s, Falconetti’s and Havana.
 
Shopping
 
In this neighbourhood, you can find specialty shops, vintage clothing boutiques and independent grocery stores, with Commercial Drive being one of Vancouver’s organic food hubs. Stroll along The Drive and browse the shelves and rails of vintage hotspot, Mintage, homeware and gift store, LaLa’s, and pretty boutique, Barefoot Contessa, before picking up groceries at Donald’s Market or Safeway, located close to the Commercial-Drive Skytrain.
 
Schools
 
With more than five schools in the area, Grandview is the perfect place for families, without being too far removed from what makes Vancouver great. Nearby schools include Grandview Elementary, Queen Alexandra Elementary, Mount Pleasant Elementary, Lord Nelson Elementary and Britannia Secondary School. Vancouver Community College is a short journey away on East Broadway.
 
Transportation
 
With a range of plentiful bus routes, bike paths and driver routes, and with the Skytrain Station connecting two routes at Commercial Broadway, residents have easy access to neighbourhoods surrounding Hastings-Sunrise, downtown Vancouver, Gastown, Mount Pleasant and Trout Lake.
