History
 
Howe Sound is well known as being an area of high ecological significance, home to a large proportion of BC’s mammals, breeding birds and freshwater fish. But it wasn’t always like this, having previously been polluted by waste compiled from the Britannia Mine during the early 1900s. In 1998, after a dedicated community clean up, marine wildlife began to return to Howe Sound and made it the rich and bio-diverse fjord it is today.
 
Location
 
The mouth of Howe Sound is situated at the Strait of Georgia between West Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast. A triangular shaped sound, it’s open on its southeast towards the Strait of Georgia, and extends 42 kilometres to its head at Squamish. The larger communities in Howe Sound include Bowen Island, Gibsons and Langdale on the Sechelt Peninsula, Horseshoe Bay and Lions Bay on the eastern shoreline and Squamish located at the head of the Sound.

If you drive north up to Squamish, the Sea to Sky Gondola offers a range of unique dining experiences with breathtaking views 885m above Howe Sound.
 
Shopping
 
Nearby Horseshoe Bay is full of retail stores, from gift shops and fashion boutiques, to art galleries and convenience stores. Among some of the most popular are Lalli Loves It, Spirit Gallery and Butter Lane Bakeshop. The Lookout Coffee House at Sewell’s Marina is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and enjoy the view, while the Seaside Village Cafe is a charming spot offering amazing Sandwiches, some of the best Italian coffee and friendly service. If you’re looking for a place to do your grocery shopping, Safeway on Headland Drive is just a few minutes drive, and is also home to Caulfeild Village Centre, featuring a BC Liquor Store, Village Pharmasave, and a pet shop.

Schools
 
The West Vancouver region of Howe Sound is in a great location to access a variety of schools, with elementary schools including Gleneagles Chaxay Elementary and Caulfeild Elementary, Rockridge Secondary and West Vancouver Secondary being popular choices for older students. Private establishment, Mulgrave School, which boasts the International Baccalaureate program, is also less than a 10 minute drive from Horseshoe Bay.
 
Transportation
 
If you choose to drive, as many Howe Sound residents do, the British Columbia Highway 99 (the Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the Squamish Highway) runs along its east shore , linking the Lower Mainland to Lions Bay, Britannia Beach, Squamish, where it then proceeds inland to Whistler and beyond. Squamish also provides a local bus service, as well as being home to Greyhound buses which take passengers to Whistler. Parts of Howe Sound, including Horseshoe Bay are also serviced by BC Ferries. Many amenities are also accessible by foot.
