A neighbourhood in the Lower Mainland, the boundaries of Southlands are the Fraser River to the south, UBC to the northwest, SW Marine Drive to the north, and Angus Drive to the east. Nearby neighbourhoods include Dunbar, Arbutus-Ridge, Kerrisdale, West Point Grey, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy, Fairview and South Cambie.
A fairly diverse neighbourhood, Southlands is made up mainly English residents, with the area also becoming more popular to Chinese residents in recent years. There are a large number of families living in Southlands (53%), with couples making up approximately 30% and singles 17%. Around 31% of Southlands residents are between the ages of 30 and 54, many of whom have children.

Southlands is largely made up of single-family homes, reflecting the housing types of its neighbouring district, Dunbar. A fairly rural neighbourhood, Southlands is also home to a number of horse stables and estate homes, and despite being just 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver, residents are experiencing a taste of the countryside. Southlands has a huge amount of green space in the area, with a number of parks stretching across the neighbourhood, including Fraser River Park, offering plenty of spots to take the dog for a walk or go for a leisurely stroll or jog, as well as a picnic area for the summer months, and Musqueam Park to the northwest, where you can complete the popular destination walking trail, taking you past the Fraser River, Musqueam Creek and Cutthroat Creek. Two of Vancouver’s best-loved golf courses are also located in the neighbourhood, McCleery Golf Course and Point Grey Golf and Country Club.
Southlands is surrounded by lots of restaurants and cafes, with many located in the neighbourhood’s surrounding shopping districts. The 41st Avenue corridor features vast amounts of restaurants and cafes, with popular choices including Minerva Pizza and Steak House, a family owned pizzeria serving traditional Italian and Greek dishes, Lok’s Chinese Restaurant, serving popular Chinese fare, and Sofra Mediterranean Kitchen, offering pizza from a stone oven, plus hummus, baba ghanoush and shawarma. Neighbouring community Dunbar is home to popular eateries such as The Dunbar Public House, serving craft beers, burgers and weekend brunch, and the Cheshire Cheese Inn, a popular Irish pub.

As mentioned above,Southlands has three shopping districts within a short distance, including the 41st Avenue corridor of shops, home to stores including Shopper’s Drug Mart, Town Shoes, and children’s clothing store, Blake & Riley, the Dunbar shopping district, home to a variety of small shops, grocery stores, a liquor store and movie theatre, and Granville Street, where residents can browse through stores such as Anthropologie and La Vie en Rose, before shopping for groceries at Meinhardt Fine Foods or getting their hair done at Suki’s.
A popular area of families, there are numerous choices for schools in and around the Southlands neighbourhood. Elementary schools in the area include Southlands Elementary, Kerrisdale Elementary, Kerrisdale Annex and McKechnie Elementary, while secondary schools include Point Grey Secondary and Magee Secondary. Private schools in the area include Crofton House, St. George’s School, Immaculate Conception School, Glen Eden School and the Vancouver Montessori School. The University of British Columbia (UBC) is also just a 10 minute journey away.
With a walk score of 68, Southlands is the 16th most walkable neighbourhood in Vancouver. The neighbourhood also has good transportation, offering easy access to downtown Vancouver and surrounding neighbourhoods. Those who drive have easy downtown access, with the area’s main arterial routes making it simple to hook up with the main highway/freeway routes to the outlying areas of the Lower Mainland. The Vancouver International Airport is also an easy commute from Southlands.
