Located 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver, the University neighbourhood is located on the western tip of the Lower Mainland, with surrounding neighbourhoods including Dunbar, Southlands, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and Arbutus.

Despite the common perception, the University neighbourhood is home to more than just students, with the area’s ease of access to both UBC and downtown Vancouver making this neighbourhood extremely popular with young people and families. There is also a high population of residents living in this neighbourhood between the ages of 40 and 64. A diverse neighbourhood, this area is home to almost as many Chinese residents as English residents.
 
Residential Housing
 
The University area is home to a diverse range of housing options, from student accommodation and strata properties, to luxury homes situated on premium land. In recent years, there has also been an increase in the development of multi-family townhomes, many of which have secondary suites which can be conveniently rented out to students seeking accommodation in the neighbourhood. Recreation
 
The ideal neighbourhood for lovers of the outdoors and nature, residents are always just a short walk from a forest, beach, or stunning mountain views. Being on the western tip of the Lower Mainland, the University neighbourhood is located close to two beaches, where you can play sports, go for a leisurely stroll or simply relax in the sun. The Pacific Spirit Park has lots of trails to explore, where you can hike, dog walk, bike or horseback ride. Other popular attractions in the University neighbourhood include the Museum of Anthropology (MOA), UBC Botanical Garden and Nitobe Memorial (Japanese) Garden.
 
Restaurants
 
The UBC campus is home to a range of restaurants and cafes, with popular choices including Browns Socialhouse, Mahony & Sons, and Ike’s Cafe. The nearby West 10th Avenue corridor also features a vast array of eateries and coffee shops, such as Denty’s Irish Grill and Bean Around The World. The neighbourhood is also just a short commute from Dunbar’s main street, where residents can take their pick from independent stores, including bakeries like Butter Baked Goods and popular coffee shop, Blaq Sheep.
 
Shopping
 
As with restaurants, many shops can be found around the UBC Campus, including The Running Room, UBC Bookstore and Murchie’s Fine Tea, and places like Save-On-Foods, Magda’s Mini Market and Harvest selling grocery store supplies. West 10th Avenue is home to grocery store, Safeway, as well as stores such as Hewer Home Hardware and Garden Centre and Point Grey Pharmacy. Also within a short commute is the charming shopping on Dunbar’s main street, home to thrift shops, wine cellars and more.
 
Schools
 
The availability of schooling in this area is plentiful, with elementary schools including University Hill Elementary and Southlands Elementary, secondary schools including University Hill Secondary and Lord Byng Secondary, and private schools including Westside Christian School and St. George’s School.
 
Transportation
 
If you drive, as many University residents do, the area is around a 30 minute drive to downtown Vancouver, and also has easy access to YVR Airport. University residents are also within easy reach of several transit routes, with four bus routes connecting UBC to downtown Vancouver, and other buses serving Richmond, the North Shore, Burnaby, and the airport. The UBC Community Shuttle also serves the UBC campus in two directions, making it easy for students to get from UBC housing to almost any on-campus destination.
