Downtown Eastside is bordered byFraser River to the south, Burrard Inlet to the north, Ontario Street to the west, and Burnaby to the East. The neighbourhood stretches across Gastown, to downtown Vancouver and through Chinatown. The Downtown East runs from the waters of Burrard Inlet to the north, stretching down to its southern points marked by Pacific Boulevard through to Quebec and Main Street. The western and eastern borders of Carrall Street and Main Street mark the edge of this small section of the Downtown peninsula. This history-filled neighbourhood includes the oldest parts of famous Gastown, parts of historic Chinatown, and a portion of the Downtown Eastside.
 
Demographic
 
Since the 1880s, Downtown Eastside has been home to immigrants from various places, due to its affordable housing and variety of real estate options. The neighbourhood of Downtown Eastside continues to increase in popularity, making the area more diverse, both ethnically and linguistically. Currently, 40% of Downtown Eastside residents are of Asian descent.
 
Residential Housing 
 
In some ways, the real estate in Downtown Eastside is as diverse as its residents. Take your pick of townhouse complexes, new mid and high-rise developments, and luxury waterfront condos, many of which offer stunning views of the North Shore. Recreation
 
Downtown Eastside is known for its accessibility to some of Vancouver’s best parks, with Stanley Park, with its magnificent seawall and view of the city, Portside Park, Vancouver’s hidden gem, and Andy Livingstone Park, with soccer fields and a baseball diamond, just a short journey away. Underneath the Georgia Viaduct, there are two tennis courts and a skateboard park, and of course there are plenty of running and biking routes too. For people to enjoy living an active lifestyle, Downtown Eastside is the perfect place for jogging, dog walking, or just taking a break and relaxing in the park.
 
Restaurants
 
With the area stretching across Gastown, downtown Vancouver and Chinatown, the restaurants and cafes offer a variety of cuisine prepared by chefs of a range of ethnicities. The fact that 40% of residents are Asian means sushi restaurants are always just a short walk away. There are also restaurants offering Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, French, Greek, and Italian food, to name a few. Popular dining spots include Kissa Tanto, serving Italian-Japanese cuisine and cocktails and inspired by 1960s Tokyo jazz cafes, Cuchillo, offering Latin American small plates, and Bestie, a German-inspired eatery with some of the best currywurst Vancouver has to offer.
 
Shopping
 
Downtown Eastside is home to a variety of fashion and design boutiques, art galleries and grocery stores. The best shopping districts surrounding the neighbourhood are Granville Street, where you can find stores such as Hudson’s Bay, Topshop, and Vans, as well as the Pacific Centre Mall on W Georgia Street. Robson Street and Gastown are also great areas for shopping, with stores like L’Occitane, Roots and Hudson House gift store. Nearby grocery stores include Nesters Market, IGA Marketplace and Sunrise Market.

Schools
 
Downtown Vancouver is home to various elementary and secondary establishments, with elementary schools including Elsie Roy Elementary, Lord Strathcona Elementary, and Admiral Seymour Elementary. King George Secondary School is also just minutes away. SFU, BCITand UBC all have campuses located in Vancouver’s downtown, and Gastown is also home to various specialty schools, including Vancouver Film School, Aveda Institute Vancouver and Vancouver School of Bodywork and Massage.
 
Transportation
 
Although many residents living in Downtown Eastside drive, owning a car is not necessary since the neighbourhood is extremely well served by public transit. Several Skytrain stations are within a short walk, including Granville Street, Stadium Chinatown, and Waterfront, which connects to the Canada Line. Many amenities are also easily accessible by foot.
