Located in the southern part of Vancouver, Marpole is bordered by Park Drive to the north, Granville Street to the west, Main Street to the east and the Fraser River to the south. Nearby neighborhoods include Oakridge, Kerrisdale, South Cambie, Shaughnessy, Sunset, Riley Park and Arbutus-Ridge.
 
Demographic
 
A fairly diverse neighbourhood, Marpole is home to around 24,000 people, including families, students, retirees and young professionals. Residents aged between 40 and 64, make up 37% of Marpole’s population, and 20% are aged between 20 and 39. The neighbourhood is also culturally diverse, with equal numbers of English and Chinese people (39%).
 
Residential Housing
 
As one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Vancouver, many homes in Marpole were built between World War II and the early 1970s. Single-family homes and condos make up the majority of housing types in the neighbourhood, with apartments catering to a more mobile population such as students. Marpole offers its residents plenty to do in terms of recreational activities, home to various parks, including Oak Park, Shannon Park and Winona Park, which has three parallel fields and a children’s playground. This park is also renowned for its amazing view of the Fraser River. Other recreational facilities in the neighbourhood include the Marpole Oakridge Community Centre, featuring a fitness centre, racquet courts, whirlpool and sauna, and youth room, the Marpole Soccer Club, which offers boys and girls aged 5 to 17 years old an opportunity to play community soccer at a recreational or competitive level, as well as Marpole Baseball Club, and Marpole Curling Club. The main area for dining out in Marpole is located on Granville Street between West 63rd and West 70th Avenue. Popular eateries include Talay Thai, Sushi King House, Johnny’s Pizza Factory and Mirchi Restaurant. Many popular restaurants can also be found along South West Marine Drive between Granville and Main Street, including Cafe de l’Orangerie, serving Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine, Pink Elephant Thai, and Hudson’s Landing Pub.
 
Shopping
 
The Granville Street corridor is the neighbourhood’s main shopping hub. Here you can find small independent stores and boutiques including Characters Fine Books, Enchanted Floristand Twinklebelle and natural food store, Bonjour Marketplace, as well as major stores like Safeway and the BC Liquor Store. As with restaurants, many stores are also located along South West Marine Drive, from independent stores like Farmhouse Collections Ltd to wider-known brands such as Lush Cosmetics.
 
Schools
 
An area popular with families,Marpole is home to various elementary and secondary schools. Elementary schools in the area include Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary, McKechnie Elementary, David Lloyd George Elementary, J.W. Sexsmith Elementary and Sir William Van Horne Elementary. There are also two nearby high schools, the Vancouver Hebrew Academy, Glen Eden School, St. Anthony of Padua School, and the Daisy Academy Montessori School.
 
Transportation
 
With a walk score of 72, Marpole is the 12th most walkable neighbourhood in Vancouver, meaning most amenities are easily accessible by foot. Several bus routes also pass through Marpole, which makes it easy to catch a bus in almost any direction. The nearby Marine Drive SkyTrain station serves the area via the Canada Line.
