Location
South Cambie is bordered by Oak Street to the west, Cambie Street to the east, West 16th Avenue to the north and West 41st Avenue to the south. Nearby neighbourhoods include Shaughnessy, Riley Park, Oakridge, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Marpole and Downtown.
Demographic
A predominantly residential area mingled with educational institutions and seniors facilities, the majority of residents in South Cambie are aged between 20 and 39 (32%) or 40 to 64 (33%). Although most people speak English as their first language (64%), there is also a growing Chinese population (19%). Due to its close proximity to several schools, the neighbourhood is also popular with young couples and families.
Residential Housing
The majority of the neighbourhood is covered by single-family homes, with many having been built between 1940 and 1980. Several of those homes feature basement suites, several of which are rented out to students and individuals living in the neighbourhood. There has also been a surge in the number of townhouse developments in recent years, built to reflect South Cambie’s heritage. Due to demographic demands, there are many new developments on the rise. Recreation
Home to some of the best amenities in Vancouver, there are ample options for recreation in the area. The nearby Langara Golf Course is the perfect spot, not only for golf enthusiasts, but for those looking to lead an active lifestyle, with plenty of walking and jogging trails surrounding the area. Cambie Park, located on the western border of South Cambie, is home to soccer fields, baseball diamonds and picnic areas. The Hillcrest Centre also offers plenty of indoor recreational courses and facilities, including an aquatic centre, fitness centre, ice rink, gymnasium, indoor cycling, dance studio, and café.
Restaurants
The main area for restaurants and cafes in the South Cambie neighbourhood is along the Cambie Street corridor between West 16th and West 23rd Avenue. Popular restaurants include modern gastropub, BierCraft Bistro, 3G Vegetarian Restaurant, Pronto, serving Italian cuisine and Landmark Hot Pot House, a Chinese restaurant where diners cook their own meals in pots of hot broth. Popular cafes include the Piast Bakery and Deli, Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe, Lemonade Gluten Free Bakery. There are also several eateries located in Oakridge Shopping Centre, including White Spot, Curry Express, Taco Luis and Togo Sushi.
Shopping
With South Cambie just minutes from the Oakridge Shopping Centre, this major shopping destination is home to a Safeway grocery store, retail outlets including The Body Shop, Aritzia, Banana Republic and Hudson’s Bay, as well as several coffee shops and a movie theatre. One of the largest liquor stores in Vancouver is also located on the opposite corner. As with restaurants, many shops are also located along the Cambie Street corridor between West 16th and West 23rd Avenue and is home to stores such as Choices Markets and Black Dog Videoand independent stores like Shop Cocoon, Woofgang Pet Supplies, Kaboodles Toy Store and Walrus Design.
Schools
A popular area with families, many schools are within walking distance for students, including Laurier Elementary, Dr. Annie B Jamieson Elementary and JW Sexsmith Elementary. Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School is also easily accessible, and private schools in the area include St. Andrew’s College and King David High School. Langara College lies just outside the borders of South Cambie, with large numbers of students and employers of the college living in this neighbourhood.
Transportation
With a walk score of 49, South Cambie is the 9th most walkable neighborhood in Vancouver, meaning many amenities are within walking distance for residents. The South Cambie area also offers a number of transit options, with the nearby Langara- 49th Avenue SkyTrain station offering access to the Canada Line in three directions. Regular bus services also operate in this neighbourhood.
