Location
Point Grey is bordered by Alma Street to the east, Blanca to the west, 16th Avenue to the south, and NW Marine Drive to the north. Nearby neighbourhoods include Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Arbutus-Ridge, Kerrisdale, Shaughnessy, West End and Fairview.
Demographic
Point Grey is a fairly diverse neighbourhood, with the majority of residents aged between 40 and 64 (39%), and 20 to 39 year olds making up 24% of the neighbourhood’s population. Point Grey is largely made up of families, professional singles and couples, and students. 70% of Point Grey residents speak English as their first language, and 13% are Chinese.
Residential Housing
The majority of dwellings in Point Grey are single-family detached homes. Since the area is home to many professional singles and students, many detached homes also feature basement suites, which are rented out. Point Grey is built mainly on a north facing slope, so some lucky residents also experience spectacular views of the ocean, city and the North Shore. Many detached homes are highly priced, and as a result, there has been a push for the neighbourhood to provide alternative and affordable housing. Recreation
A popular place with lovers of the outdoors, Jericho Park, Locarno Beach and Spanish Banks are all easily accessible, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy long walks along the beach, sailing, picnicking and just relaxing in the sun. There are many recreational activities along the waterfront to get involved in, such as the Jericho Sailing Club, the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the Jericho Tennis Club. The West Point Grey Community Centre also offers a multitude of activities, with exercise class, art classes, cooking classes and fun sports for all ages. Restaurants
Many Point Grey restaurants and cafes are gathered around Alma Street between West 4th and West 11th Avenue. Popular choices include Baru Latino, serving tapas and tacos and featuring regular live music, neighbourhood pub, Wolf & Hound Restaurant, Italian restaurant, La Quercia, and Aphrodite’s Organic Cafe, serving some of the best brunch in Vancouver’s West. There are also several restaurants around West 10th Avenue between Tolmie Street and Discovery Street, including Burgoo Point Grey and Bellaroma Pizzeria & Ristorante. The Jericho Sailing Club is also home to one of the best ‘view’ cafes in town.
Shopping
The main shopping strip in Point Grey is located on West 10th Avenue between Alma and Tolmie Street, where you can find everything from boutiques and deli’s, to antique and collectibles shops. Popular stores include Urban Yarns, Hewer Home Hardware and Garden Centre, Liberty Wine Merchants and grocery store, Safeway. Further up 10th Avenue, one of the main routes to UBC features a mix of retail shops, grocery stores and upscale fashion boutiques.
Schools
Since Point Grey is an extremely popular area with families, there are plenty of educational institutions to choose from. Elementary schools include Queen Elizabeth Elementary, Jules Quesnel ElementaryorQueen Mary Elementary. Lord Byng Secondary is the high school within the area’s boundaries, and University Hill Secondary is just a short distance away. Private schools in the neighbourhood include West Point Grey Academy and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The highly-acclaimed University of British Columbia (UBC) also offers opportunities for higher education and is located further up the hill
Transportation
With a walk score of 74, Point Grey is the 11th most walkable neighborhood in Vancouver, meaning many amenities are accessible via foot. The neighbourhood also has excellent public transportation, providing easy access to the downtown core and to UBC. Biking routes also provide another option for those commuting downtown who don’t want to drive.
