Explore Main

Main Street is at the hub of activity in East Vancouver, offering its residents a large number of restaurants, shopping and entertainment outlets, while retaining its tight-knit community feel that makes this neighbourhood so great. Now, after the construction of the Canada Line transit system and the plentiful housing options in the area, Main Street is becoming increasingly desirable with all it has to offer.

Location

One of the smallest areas for real estate in Vancouver, Main Street spans from E 18th Avenue to the north to W 49th at the south, and from Ontario Street to the west, to Prince Edward Street to the east. The community is surrounded by Mount Pleasant, South Vancouver, Cambie and Fraser, and also encompasses an area known as Riley Park and Little Mountain.

Demographic

The Main Street neighbourhood is an attractive area to many young professionals and creative types, due to the large number of trendy bars, restaurants and boutique shops it is home to. Real estate in this neighbourhood is more affordable than on the Westside, which also makes it extremely appealing to a younger crowd. Its proximity to the Vancouver General Hospital also makes it a hub for health-care services and practitioners.

Residential Housing

This neighbourhood is made up of a combination of detached homes on the side streets, with low-rise condos in the central part of Main Street. The neighbourhood is home to some great character homes, although new developments such as Bluetree Homes and The Riley, are becoming more popular. Contact me to find out more about current bench mark pricing in the area.

Recreation

The Main Street neighbourhood is home to the Hillcrest Centre, which was originally the location of the former curling venue for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. Offering residents in the area fantastic recreational facilities, including an aquatic centre, fitness centre, ice rink and gym, those wanting to lead an active lifestyle have everything they need here. It’s also home to the Terry Salman Library and Vancouver Curling Club, offering lessons and running regular events.

Restaurants

Main Street offers a fantastic range of independent restaurants, bars and cafes, where you can enjoy a fun night out with family and friends. Popular spots include East is East, serving authentic Indian cuisine, Meet on Main, a vegetarian and vegan eatery, French Table, offering classic French fare, and Charlie’s Little Italian, the local neighbourhood pizza and pasta joint. Thanks to more affordable commercial rents in comparison to the West Side, there are always new restaurants, bars and shops popping up too.

Shopping

An area popular with a younger crowd in particular, the Main Street area continues to grow commercially, offering residents a range of eclectic antique stores, boutiques showcasing local designers, and thrift shops. Popular stores include Welk’s General Store, Front & Company, The Regional Assembly of Text, Red Cat Records and Main Street Honey Shoppe. If you’re looking for a place to shop for groceries, you are spoilt for choice in this neighbourhood, with Main Street being home to Save-On-Foods, Nesters Market, Organic Acres Market and Windsor Quality Meats.

Schools

There are many options for students living in the Main Street neighbourhood, making it an appealing location for families. Elementary schools include Brock Elementary, Livingstone Elementary, Nightingale Elementary, Mount Pleasant Elementary and Sir Alexander Mackenzie Elementary. Secondary schools in the area include Sir Charles Tupper Secondary and John Oliver Secondary.

Transportation

There are many transportation options for residents of the Main Street neighbourhood, meaning owning a car is not a necessity. Access to the Millennium Line, Expo Line and the Canada Line is easy, with Skytrain stations located nearby. There are also several major bus routes offering quick access to downtown and other areas of Vancouver. Of course, many amenities are also within walking distance.
