Location
 
Located in the heart of Vancouver, Oakridge is bordered by West 41st Avenue to the north, West 49th Avenue to the south, Ontario Street to the east, and Oak Street to the west. Nearby neighbourhoods include Marpole, South Cambie, Shaughnessy, Riley Park, Sunset, Kerrisdale and Fairview.
 
Demographic
 
Oakridge’s close proximity to downtown Vancouver makes it an ideal neighbourhood for working professionals, and with lots of green space nearby, it’s the perfect place to raise a family. Oakridge is also quite a diverse community, popular with the Chinese and Jewish communities. 50% of Oakridge residents speak Chinese as their first language.
 
Residential Housing
 
Oakridge consists largely of single-family detached homes, with many boasting large lots. There are also many older bungalows, many of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s, mixed in with newer, custom-built homes. Several detached homes also have basement suites, many of which are rented out to students in the area. Within the Oakridge area, there also are many assisted-living structures and facilities that cater to a growing senior population. Recreation
 
Oakridge offers its residents plenty to do in terms of recreational activities. Popular attractions include a variety of local parks, including the nearby Columbia Park, which is home to a wading pool, and Tisdall Park which has a wellness centre for seniors. The Langara Golf Course and the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver are also both within easy reach. A short journey out of the neighbourhood takes you to Queen Elizabeth Park, home to a pitch and putt course and Bloedel Conservatory, and the Nat Bailey Stadium, home of the Vancouver Canadians baseball team.
 
Restaurants
 
The Oakridge Centre is full of restaurants and eateries for residents to enjoy, including White Spot, Togo Sushi, Peninsula Seafood Restaurant and Curry Express. Various restaurants are also located at Oak and 49th, including Pho Hoa, Sushi Mura and A&W, and along Cambie Street. If nothing takes your fancy, downtown Vancouver, Richmond and YVR airport are just a short journey away, all of which are home to many restaurants and cafes.
 
Shopping
 
The Oakridge Centre is the main place for shopping in the neighbourhood, a major retail zone with over 150 retailers. Shops range from large chain stores such as Safeway and Hudson’s Bay, to specialty and gift stores like Papyrus and Trident Key Mart. Smaller strip malls also anchor the other three corners of this shopping hub and include one of the largest specialty Liquor Stores in Metro Vancouver. If you’re looking for medical offices and pharmacies, there are plenty in the Oakridge Centre Towers.
 
Schools
 
Oakridge is a popular place with families, being home to various elementary and secondary schools. Elementary schools include Sir William Van Horne Elementary, Jamieson Elementaryand Sir William Osler Elementary. Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School offers the facilities for the older children in the family. Independent schools include King David High School and Vancouver College. Langara College, located at 49th and Cambie, also brings in lots of people seeking a post-secondary education.
 
Transportation
 
With a walk score of61, Oakridge is the 22nd most walkable neighborhood, meaning many amenities are accessible by foot. Public transit in the neighbourhood is also frequent, with several bus routes serving the area. The Canada Line has stations at 41st Avenue and Cambie, and at 49th Avenue and Cambie (Langara station). Oakridge is also just a short drive to UBC and Richmond with easy access to the downtown core.
