History
 
Fraserview officially became part of Vancouver in 1929, where it started out as a largely industrial area. After WWII, hundreds of houses were built in the neighbourhood to accommodate returning soldiers, and during the 1950s, became known as‘Diaper Town’due to its large population of young families. As time went on, the area transformed into residential properties, where new townhomes and apartments began to be built, a trend that continues today.
 
Location
 
Located in southeast Vancouver, the Fraserview neighbourhood stretches from the Fraser River down to East 54th Avenue, and is bordered by Knight Street to the west and Vivian Drive and Fraserview Golf Course to the east. Nearby communities include South Vancouver, Champlain Heights and Killarney.
 
Demographic
 
A multiculturally diverse area, Fraserview has a large Asian population enjoying the educational and economic opportunities this neighbourhood has to offer. Lots of families from the Philippines, Vietnam and Southeast Asia also call Fraserview home, with it being a popular destination for its fresh produce, imported goods, and international cuisine.
 
Residential Housing
 
The Fraserview neighbourhood encompasses a mix of houses, with a large area of single-family and new condo and townhome developments which offer stunning water views. Low-rise condos and apartments are particularly popular with young families and older residents south of Marine Drive along the Fraser River. Due to its history, Fraserview is still home to many houses built in the 1940s when land was assigned for returning veterans from WWll. Restaurants
 
A short drive north of Fraserview neighbourhood, you’ll find range of restaurants along Victoria Drive, including Neighbour’s Restaurant and Pizza House, serving Italian-Greek comfort food in a family-friendly setting, as well as a variety of other dining spots suiting Fraserviews ethnically diverse population. Popular restaurants include Lim Kee Restaurant, Victoria Restaurant, Lucky Dragon Palace Restaurant, Nishiki Sushi Bar, Tbisti Grill, and La Tandoori. A five minute drive along Marine Drive will take you to various eateries, including White Spot, Flamingo Chinese Restaurant, Panos Greek Taverna and Super Dhaba Indian Cuisine. Soon to come will be also be a new public plaza, featuring restaurants overlooking the Fraser River.
 
Shopping
 
The area’s closest shopping mall is Champlain Square, a short drive from Fraserview, and featuring over 45 shops and services. Here you can find banks, nail bars, bakeries and jewellers, as well as a dental and medical centre. Other shops in the area are clustered around the south end of Main Street, with Victoria Drive also good for shopping. If you’re looking for a place to do your grocery shopping, there is a Real Canadian Superstore a short drive along SE Marine Drive, and a Safeway a short drive north on Kingsway. The newly developed public plaza will also be home to several shops when built.
 
Schools
 
The Fraserview neighbourhood is a great place for families, with a variety of elementary and secondary schools in the area. Elementary schools in the area include Sir James Douglas School Annex and David Oppenheimer Elementary, while many high school students attend David Thompson Secondary located on 55th Avenue to the north. Fraserview is also home to a few private schools a little further west, including Vancouver College, Little Flower Academy, a Catholic high school for girls, and York House School.
 
Transportation
 
One of the best things about Fraserview is its central location, just a 10 minute drive to Richmond, 10 minutes to Metrotown shopping centre, and a 20 minute drive from downtown Vancouver. Marine Drive connects to YVR and Highway 99 south to the US border. Vancouver’s Translink bus service also provides regular service along Knight Street, Marine Drive and Victoria Drive.
