Explore Coal Harbour

A thriving Vancouver neighbourhood, Coal Harbour is the perfect location for those who love the open water, but still want easy access to all that Vancouver’s busy city has to offer. A neighbourhood that got its name after coal was found here in 1859, Coal Harbour is home to several marinas and is a popular place for boating. The entire neighborhood is also lined by a long walkway, providing a wonderful place for residents to go running or take a casual stroll by the waterside. Take a closer look at this stunning community.

Location

Located between Stanley Park and the Canada Place Pier, the neighborhood sits along a part of the picturesque Burrard Inlet. It is bounded by Burrard Street to the southeast, W Georgia and W Pender Street to the southwest, and Stanley Park to the northwest.

Demographic

Coal Harbour is within walking distance of Vancouver’s busy financial sector, where a large proportion of residents are highly paid professionals with no children. Around half of the residents are married or living with a partner, while half are single. Despite the neighbourhood being home to lower numbers of children than other areas, this number has more than doubled since 2001.

Residential Housing

An affluent area, Coal Harbour is a neighbourhood full of high-rise buildings and glass skyscrapers. Many homes situated along Coal Harbour’s glorious waterfronts are lucky enough to experience beautiful mountain views over the marina and across to the Burrard Inlet. Recreation

Coal Harbour’s walkway is a paved walking and biking path starting near Canada Place which is connected to the Stanley Park seawall and runs along the waterfront. A popular place for runners and dog walkers, the walkway is a relaxing place to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon with your loved ones. The route is also surrounded by several parks and green spaces, including the new Harbour park. The Vancouver Convention Centre is also a popular place in the Coal Harbour neighbourhood, running regular events. Adjacent to the Convention Centre is popular attraction, FlyOver Canada, located at Canada Place, the ultimate flying ride and a must-try experience. There is also a growing artisan community in Coal Harbour, with a Music and Arts Festival which runs between April and May.

Restaurants

Coal Harbour marina is home to some of Vancouver’s best restaurants, with stunning mountain views over the Burrard Inlet. With a waterfront location, marina restaurants serve some of Vancouver’s freshest seafood, with Cardero’s, which sits on Coal Harbour Quay serving a wide selection of seafood and steak, and Chewies Steam and Oysters providing southern inspired seafood. Other popular restaurants in the area include Cactus Club Cafe, Tableau Bar Bistro and Preston’s. And of course, all other downtown restaurants are just a short walk from the neighbourhood.

Shopping

Coal Harbour is within walking distance of both Robson Street, home to popular stores like Roots, J Crew and Lululemon, and Granville Street, which is also home to Hudson’s Bay, Canada’s iconic department store, and the Pacific Centre Mall. Also nearby are the Bentall Centre, and the shops along Burrard Landing, including Play & Learn and Snowggle Gifts. If you’re looking for a place to shop for groceries, Urban Fare is a short distance away on Bute Street, while IGA Marketplace is located on Robson Street. Coal Harbour Liquor Store is also conveniently located on W Pender street, selling a large collections of wines, beers and spirits.

Schools

An area with a higher proportion of individuals and couples, there aren’t a great deal of schools in the Coal Harbour area, although there are plans for a Coal Harbour Elementary school, which would be located next to the neighbourhood’s community centre. The closest schools are West End’s Lord Roberts Elementary, Yaletown’s Elsie Roy Elementary and Alexander Academy (High School). There are also several specialist schools located around the Coal Harbour area, including the Fine Art Bartending School on W Pender Street, and the Vancouver College of Massage Therapy.

Transportation

With a walk score of 96, downtown Vancouver is the most walkable neighbourhood in Vancouver, meaning owning a car is not necessary. Downtown Vancouver also has world-class public transportation with Waterfront, Granville and Burrard Skytrain stations all within walking distance. There are also regular buses in the area, including free shuttles taking passengers to popular attractions, Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain. Coal Harbour is also home to Vancouver’s largest seaplane terminal, serving the Pacific Northwest Coast, including Vancouver Island.
