Despite the common perception, the University neighbourhood is home to more than just students, with the area’s ease of access to both UBC and downtown Vancouver making this neighbourhood extremely popular with young people and families. A diverse neighbourhood, this area is home to almost as many Chinese residents as English residents.

The Pacific Spirit Park has lots of trails to explore, where you can hike, dog walk, bike or horseback ride. As with restaurants, many shops can be found around the UBC Campus, including The Running Room, UBC Bookstore and Murchie’s Fine Tea, and places like Save-On-Foods, Magda’s Mini Market and Harvest selling grocery store supplies. West 10th Avenue is home to grocery store, Safeway, as well as stores such as Hewer Home Hardware and Garden Centre and Point Grey Pharmacy. Also within a short commute is the charming shopping on Dunbar’s main street, home to thrift shops, wine cellars and more.
 
Schools
 
The availability of schooling in this area is plentiful, with elementary schools including University Hill Elementary and Southlands Elementary, secondary schools including University Hill Secondary and Lord Byng Secondary, and private schools including Westside Christian School and St. George’s School.
 
Transportation
 
If you drive, as many University residents do, the area is around a 30 minute drive to downtown Vancouver, and also has easy access to YVR Airport. University residents are also within easy reach of several transit routes, with four bus routes connecting UBC to downtown Vancouver, and other buses serving Richmond, the North Shore, Burnaby, and the airport. The UBC Community Shuttle also serves the UBC campus in two directions, making it easy for students to get from UBC housing to almost any on-campus destination.
